Day 3 ‘Step into the river’ (Joshua 3:3-5) - Week of Prayer & Fasting Devotional

Joshua 3:3–5

“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.”

The people of Israel were standing at the edge of the Jordan. They had never been this way before.

They didn't know exactly what was ahead, but they were given a simple instruction: follow the presence of God.

There is something deeply challenging about following God into places we have never been before. We often want certainty before obedience. We want to know how everything will work out before we take the first step.

But sometimes faith means stepping towards the water before we see the way through.

God told Joshua and the people to consecrate themselves because something was about to happen. Their response was not simply to ask God to remove every obstacle. They were being called to prepare themselves and then step forward in faith.

As we pray today, perhaps the question is not only, “God, will you make a way?” Perhaps it is also, “God, where are you asking me to step?”. On Monday we remembered that God is with us, and because of that simple truth, we can have courage. Let’s harness that courage and take a step.

There may be a personal next step God is putting before you. There may be something he is asking us to step into together as a church. We don't need to know every detail. We need to know who we are following.

God is already at work around us. Our invitation is to notice where he is moving and have the courage to join him.

Dwell

  • What does this show me about how God works?

  • What might God be asking me to do?

  • Where is God already moving around me?

  • What is the next step of faith God is inviting me to take?

Prayer

God, show us our next step, and give us faith to take it. Help us not to spend all our time asking you to remove the obstacles in front of us. Give us courage to step into the water, trusting that you are already there. Show us where you are moving and help us faithfully follow you, both personally and as a church.

Amen.
