Debt Doesn’t Have to Be the End of the Story

by Jenny Bentley, CAP Money Coach

What was your takeaway thought from last Sunday when we heard from Stuart McCullough (CEO of CAP – Christians Against Poverty)?

Perhaps you are considering becoming a befriender and accompanying the debt coaches to visit clients?

Perhaps you personally need the help of CAP? If this is the case, please contact the New Enquiries Team at Bradford on 0800 328 0006.

There’s a lot more that the Kerith CAP team have planned for 2027 but we can only deliver this if we have enough volunteers. It’s a great way of making a difference to people’s lives. Please seek God’s guidance to see if this is something he is calling you into. As Peter, a befriender, said on Sunday’s video “I couldn’t think of a good reason why I shouldn’t be part of this”.

In addition to what you heard on Sunday, I’d like to highlight 3 areas:

  1. Schools Ministry: CAP has developed materials on money and debt for children of primary and secondary age which meet some of the curriculum. We are hoping to pilot this work with primary schools this year, but we need volunteers to help make this happen.

  2. CAP Money Workshop: this is run by our CAP money coaches and it introduces people to budgeting, understanding how credit works, managing debt, savings and smart spending. You don’t have to be in debt to do this free workshop: it’s for anyone who would like to manage their money better, and with the cost-of-living crisis, a lot of us could probably do with a bit of help!

We want to run one workshop per term, either online or in person. The next workshop is online and starts on Weds 28 Oct and runs for 3 consecutive Weds evenings.  You can sign up via this link:

3. CAP Money Coach: a CAP coach runs the CAP money workshop (see above). Online training is provided. Materials for the workshops are all supplied by CAP and you’ll be working with Ken Evans, and other money coaches to run the workshop. You don’t have to be a financial genius, but you do need to learn how the workshop works. But at the moment we only have 2 Bracknell money coaches: Sarah Hardy and Jenny Bentley, and we need more people to be willing to be trained up.

So, will you join us either as a befriender or money coach or schools team volunteer?

We are developing some role descriptions now but for more information, please email ken.evans@kerith.church to express your interest, or speak to Jenny Bentley on reception at the 9.30 service next Sunday, 25 Oct.
